QUATRONIC - This is a bit of a throw at the stumps because Quatronic’s recent form is woeful but there is an old adage in racing that ‘form is temporary but class is permanent’ and when I see a Listed winner at double figure odds in a Gold Coast provincial meeting from gate one with only 57kg over a distance at which he has won three times I have to be involved. There is no doubt Quatronic’s past 12 months have been a series of misadventures but he has been freshened by Matt Dunn since his last run at Scone, gets a tongue-tie and at his last win just over a year ago eight starts back beat Deploy and Dothraki which is decent form for this. A winner of seven of 18 starts he meets the weakest field he has seen in a long time and if anywhere near right Clayton Gallagher can bounce Quatronic to the lead and he will have too much class.
KIRONA - I have no hesitation in suggesting this Ryan Balfour-trained mare is going much better than the form reads. She has been far from disgraced in her past two starts against much tougher company than what she meets in this. She is a query over this longer 2032m but I do think she deserves a chance to be tried over longer than her recent trips, another reason why we are keen to jump on board in a moderate Benchmark 70 affair. No issues with the soft track, in fact her best form is when there is sting out of the track. At $15 she rates as a terrific each-way wager.
BOCELLI - Brown rides the promising Bocelli for Tash Burleigh in the Divall’s Earthmoving Benchmark 65 Handicap (1400m). A winner of two his four starts winning at Canberra on debut and a comfortable victory over 1200m two runs back, Bocelli tackles 1400m for the second time in his career after a closing third in a Highway Handicap at Rosehill last start. Although down the track in his only 1400m run, it was the Goulburn Country Championship Qualifier and it is worth remembering Bocelli tackled the class five race at his second career start and started at $61 so it was no surprise to find out the gelding wasn’t competitive. With an additional two runs under his belt, Bocelli is looking for the journey now and rates as the day’s best bet at Goulburn.
DAZZLING RED - Dazzling Red over-raced and was run down here last start in three-year-old company over 1200m. Tony Sears has put a crossover noseband back on which should help him settle better, the shorter trip will suit and from gate one he can make his own luck near the speed. Dazzling Red takes on older horses in this class three but he has been running against smart three-year-olds and with the stablemate Basara a scratching, should be up to this class. Nozi Tomizawa stays on and from the inside gate if Dazzling Red can produce anything like his effort when he beat Miss Exfactor last preparation he should be too good for these.
FIGHTING TEO - Fighting Teo was heavily supported last start at Sunshine Coast with connections advising he would be ridden forward from the wide gate. That failed to eventuate, he was never likely and whilst he passed a few late in the straight Damian Browne was queried over the ride. He has drawn poorly again here but being by Teofilo the extra distance should be in his favour. Fighting Teo was impressive when winning his maiden last preparation and has been heavily supported on two occasions since but failed to deliver. He must be showing something in trackwork and back on his home track with Nozi Tomizawa to ride I am expecting an improved performance from the Kevin Kemp-trained runner and at each-way odds he is worth a small flutter.
